Vegvisir, also known as the Vegvisir compass, a rune and Viking compass made up of eight Viking runes pentagrams, is a symbol of protection and guidance used by the Vikings as a compass. The word vegvisir means – Veg, which means road, route or movement and Viser, which translates as indicator or guide.

Many Viking ships used Vegvisir as a talisman to protect the ship and its crew from destruction at sea. Vegvisir offers eight directions that exit from the central point, with multiple runes attached to the end of each driver. Sometimes this symbol is encircled in a circle surrounded by runes. The current version of Vegvisir comes from three books of spells and magic from Iceland. One of them, Huld’s manuscript, contains several Nordic magic symbols, among which Vegvisir is the symbol used to guide people in bad weather: “The bearer of this symbol will not disappear in the midst of storms and bad weather, though he does not know his destination.”
