Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is a science of vague assumptions based on debatable figures derived from inconclusive experiments, performed by persons of doubtful mental capability with instruments of problematic accuracy.

Our Royal Engineers bomb disposal (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) challenge coin, we originally designed and produced in 2020 for the 80th anniversary of the formation of the unit during WWII and the blitz in 1940. It originally took several months to put our ideas over to a coin company and for it to be eventually signed off on the prototype, the result was a unique size, shape and multi layered coin of which had never been produced before, it sold out within days of the release!

Since the ‘Black Powder Guild of 1605’ stepped back into the light from the darkness and veterans and serving eod soldiers joined its’ member ranks, some members have added photos showing their challenge coin collections, due to the original coin being seen by many who had never seen it, we, the Guild committee have been asked by several members if we could make the coin available again. It was not easy as we needed to source a new coin company who would be willing to take on the daunting task; after almost 3 months of work back and forth before we signed off on the coin, not only have they managed it but the ‘Royal Engineers EOD Memorial Coin – redux’ is even better than the original, the shadowing effects, highlights etc; really stand out, each coins colouring is meticulous, including the blue bands in the bombs on both sides.

The coin features a sapper on their belt buckle with visor down searching the ground in front methodically with a detector for buried mines, alongside a large metallic version of our bomb badge. The reverse side depicts in 3D the memorial wall at carver barracks, commemorating more than 650 soldiers of the royal engineers EOD/bomb disposal units sadly killed on operations worldwide since the end of WWII, our regimental coloured bomb (designed in 1940 by none other than Her majesty queen Mary, the then Queen Mother) features pride of place at the top and the entire reverse side is intricately overlaid by the unofficial but very apt EOD science ‘quote’.

The challenge coin is a massive 8.4 x 6 cm – 125gms in weight (majority of Challenge coins are around 40gms!), is meticulously produced and hand finished, is one of the largest challenge coins ever produced and will look brilliant taking pride of place on the shelf of any Royal Engineers EOD operator. Each coin comes with its’ own unique blue velvet bag, with the bomb image and text in gold coloured print.
